Get to know Propeller’s world-class team in our new, ongoing employee spotlight series. Today, we talk to Jack Walkom, who serves as enterprise sales executive on the sales team in our Sydney, Australia, office.
My job is really to engage with prospects and customers who come to Propeller looking to solve some of the problems they have on their site. It’s a pretty exciting and rewarding job because I get to promote an innovative technology to a part of the industry where it has a real impact.
On a day-to-day basis, I’m on the phone a lot. I also spend time researching prospective companies and what’s going on in the industry. I’m often working hand-in-hand with our sales engineers and customer success team on the specifics of how our Platform adds value to some operations which I’ll communicate to customers.
It’s pretty varied. I have a degree in industrial design but moved straight into marketing after university. Since then it’s been a mix of marketing and sales, working across real estate, media, ecommerce, and enterprise software. I did launch a startup after university that was essentially crowdfunding for live music. It wasn’t successful, but it was an amazing experience. One the reasons that I enjoy working here is that it’s a really diverse workplace in terms of skillset. There’s a big hill to climb, but we have a lot of talent, a great culture, and a huge opportunity to capitalize on.
I did a couple of seasons in a lodge in the snow down in Perisher—that was super interesting. I’d wake up and help with the kitchen and then head out and snowboard between meal times.
I’m originally from Sydney, up on the Northern Beaches, but moved up to Brisbane when I was young. I lived there up until about four years ago when I moved back to Sydney and loved it here ever since.
I had a pretty interesting launch into my job here at Propeller. On my first day, I went straight to the international airport to fly from Sydney to Thailand with 50 new colleagues, and spent a week in a villa on the beach in Thailand. So it’s hard to beat that as a memory. It’s certainly going to go down as one of the better ones.
I would be a D10 dozer. It’s one of the biggest pieces of equipment on site, moves the most stuff, and no one tends to get in its way—except maybe the odd AeroPoint!
I really want to go to Wimbledon. It’s one of those events that’s exciting, classy, and goes for days. It’s just a good time in the UK.
Just “Jack.” So far. . .
I think it would be finance. Our finance manager, Dan, just sits back, throws banter at everyone, and controls the money!
I’m hypermobile, so all my joints are super flexible, and it can often look like my arms dislocate when I’m leaning on things. Not sure if that’s talent worthy.
